BERYL BES’ INTERVIEW

Check out our video of the week featuring Beryl Bès, Founder of MyAnnona and Executive Director of the LDigital Foundation. She shares her thoughts on women in the digital industry.

WHERE DO WOMEN FIT INTO THE DIGITAL INDUSTRY TODAY?

The digital industry currently has a shortage problem: a shortage of jobs. Right now, we lack resources. Some 38% of digital companies are declining contracts because they are struggling to get the required resources, and then you have women with very little presence in these jobs.

For example, only 6% of developers are women. Last week, only 1% were in cybersecurity training. In the 1980s, when home computers became common, men were the real target users. Women were relegated to household chores while men sat in front of the computer. Already, there was a certain stereotype established for sharing tasks of this type.

The solution is painstaking work that starts at an early age to allow girls and boys to show that it is an opportunity for them both and not only for boys. It means not putting tablets and video games only in the hands of boys, but also girls. That’s a lot to start with and it’s going to take a while. Then there’s a problem of immediacy, which is how to solve this problem right now, when on the one hand we have an unemployed population and on the other hand we have jobs in short supply.

What we prove every year by several studies—McKinsey does one every year—is that when company teams are mixed, they are more efficient. The whole idea is to show companies that it is in their interest to integrate women, the importance of having a much more balanced society and economy to have a greater chance of developing both external and internal wealth.
