DISCOVER OUR VISION OF THE WORLD IN 20 YEARS

We are coming to the end of our series of interviews to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Sport, environment, digital transformation… Throughout the year we were able to listen to 20 leaders from very different industries, and we would like to thank all those who participated in the interviews. For this last video, we pass the mic to the ITC teams as they imagine the world in 20 years’ time!

WHAT WILL THE WORLD BE LIKE IN 20 YEARS?

1/ CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE FUTURE OF TRANSLATION IN 3 WORDS?

Eve-Lucille: Very automatic, with a human review afterward just to check that it’s correct.

Charline: We do more and more IT. We work more often on files to find a lot of little tricks to work better with MT.

Céline: The better it goes, the more automated everything is thanks to artificial intelligence.

Marie-Françoise: We really need to diversify. It’s no longer just translation, but everything related to translation.

Charlotte: It will no longer be a translation agency, it will be content creation.

2/ CAN YOU GIVE US 3 WORDS TO DESCRIBE ITC TRANSLATIONS IN 20 YEARS?

Sara: ITC will always have a good working environment. I think it’ll always be a nice place to work and with fun people as well. I think it’ll be the same.

Céline: Retirement.

Marine: Bigger, much bigger, I guess.

Céline: Holidays.

Ingrid: A little more spread out over the globe. It would be really good for us.

Céline: Tennis.

Stéphanie: Much more connected, with many more people.

Marine: More guys.

3/ IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT WILL BE THE MAIN LANGUAGE OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN 20 YEARS?

Stéphanie: English.

Marie-Françoise: English.

Sara: I think it’ll be English.

Stéphanie: Or Google.

Charline: Chinese.

Eve-Lucille: I think it’ll always be English.

Ingrid: It will still be English.

Anastasia: Asian languages, particularly Chinese, will probably really take precedence.

Charlotte: I’m trying to decide between Chinese and English.

William: I think English will remain but I think Asian languages, particularly Chinese and an Indian variance, will be very strong going forward.

Céline: I’m pretty sure it will always be English, or emoticons.

4/ IN YOUR OPINION, IN WHICH COUNTRIES WILL ITC HAVE LOCATIONS IN 20 YEARS?

Marie-Françoise: In Ireland and why not in an Asian country.

Sara: Australia. So that way I can go home and visit.

Eve-Lucille: In Thailand, since I am learning Thai. It would allow me to practice.

Stéphanie: I think it would be nice if we went to Asia.

Ingrid: China, mainly because we are not yet established on the Asian side.

Sara: In Morocco and then we can go and have holidays there as well, I mean conferences and those sorts of things, professional holidays.

Charlotte: Madagascar would be nice. Not because I am Malagasy, but because they speak French. I think that’s a good point to target Africa, actually.

5/ IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE, WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE GREATEST INNOVATION OF THE NEXT 20 YEARS?

Anastasia: Flying cars would be great.

Sara: Definitely time travels. Then we can find out what Latin actually sounds like.

Charlotte: Not having to cook for yourself anymore.

Marine: A vegetable peeler.

Charline: I think of flying cars to avoid all the traffic jams.

Marine: There are lots of food processors that cook vegetables very well, make soups, great stuff, but there’s nothing to peel vegetables.

William: Maybe time travels. I’d probably go back to the Victorian times. It’s a nice time, a quieter time, you had more time for yourself.

Eve-Lucille: Maybe teleportation would be really fun.

Céline: Being able to teleport.

Ingrid: Teleporting somewhere.

Stéphanie: Teleportation.

Eve-Lucille: Airplanes pollute too much, cars pollute too much. I’m teleporting, no more worries about that. There’s no such thing as teleworking. I can get from home to work in 12 seconds.

6/ IN 20 YEARS, WOULD YOU RATHER BE: HYPERCONNECTED OR DISCONNECTED?

William: Disconnected

Eve-Lucille: I wouldn’t want to be hyperconnected. The idea of something like a completely connected smart home freaks me out.

Charlotte: When I was on holiday, there was no internet and it was the end of the world. So, hyperconnected for me. And I hope we’ll have internet access everywhere in 20 years.

Marie: I hope to be a little less connected than today and a big reader of novels.

Sara: I feel like technology is so…, but in 20 years’ time, I feel like I’d probably want to take a break.

Charline: Hyperconnected.

Céline: I’ll be far away in the countryside, but still hyperconnected.

Marine: We spend too much time on our smartphones and computers and we lack human relationships. I think miss that a lot. So I’d like to be a little more disconnected.

7/ IN 20 YEARS, WOULD YOU RATHER: HAVE HUMAN TRANSLATION OR MACHINE TRANSLATION?

Ingrid: Human translation of course.

Marine: Machine, to go faster.

Marie: Machine.

Anastasia: My hope is human translation, but I think the reality is machine translation.

Charline: Human translation.

Eve-Lucille: Machine.

Céline: Machine, sure. It’s not even 20 years from now, it’s now.

William: Machine translation. I think the growth is already happening, but it could be complementary to human translation. Post-editing is going to increase going forward, and translators need to adapt to seeing a lot more machine translated content.

8/ IN 20 YEARS, WOULD YOU RATHER: HAVE FAST FOOD GALORE OR ORGANIC FOOD GALORE?

Ingrid: Fast food is good, unfortunately.

Marine: Organic food galore.

Eve-Lucille: Organic. I think people are becoming aware of the importance of what they eat.

Marie: Organic fast food.

Sara: Organic all the way.

William: Organic food.

Charlotte: Organic fast food, but rather fast food.

9/ IN 20 YEARS, WOULD YOU RATHER: HAVE A FLYING CAR OR AN AUTONOMOUS CAR?

Céline: Autonomous, but I don’t trust it yet.

William: I think of flying cars. I think that we are not too far away from that already, so I think that’s going to happen in the next twenty years.

Eve-Lucille: I would say flying because I think autonomous cars will be here before 20 years.

Charlotte: Flying car.

Marie: Autonomous. We’ll see the rest in 50 years, and even 100 years for the flying cars.

Stéphanie: Autonomous flying car.

Marine: Autonomous. Flying cars will be the same mess as on land but in the air.

10/ IN 20 YEARS, WILL PEOPLE BE MORE LIKELY TO: BUY A HOUSE ON THE MOON OR CRYOGENICALLY FREEZE THEMSELVES FOR THE YEAR 3000?

Stéphanie: Both sound equally horrible!

William: Cryogenically freeze themselves, more likely. Because I think the moon is quite unhospitable.

Marie: Yes, buy a hyperconnected house on the moon.

Sara: Cryogenically freeze.

Charline: Cryogenically freeze themselves like in Futurama.

Ingrid: Buy a house on the moon.

Céline: If I only have the choice between the two, Space scares me. I wouldn’t want to go to the moon.

Marine: On the moon or on another planet. Even better on another planet
